ink paintings
Soot ink consists of burnt plant oil and resin compressed into an ink stick. The ink stick is ground gently against an ink stone with some water in order to prepare the ink for each painting. The making of ink becomes a meditative act which focuses my mind on the place I am about to represent and prepares me for the immediacy of the medium. This is also a wonderful medium to rapidly capture landscapes with on my travels.
OCEAN PAINTINGS
As I am blessed to live by the ocean, it is something that is constantly in my view. I thus feel compelled to paint it. These are a few examples of views I sit with regularly.

SPOORLOOS - INK PAINTINGS (2021)
The primary inspiration for this body of work originated in an artist’s residency in the vast, desolate Tankwa Karoo Desert which is located in the Western Cape of South Africa. This is a landscape covered in black stone, with very little vegetation, only a slight undulation in the typography and an experience of a vast expanse of space. The emptiness, the lack of reference points and the lack of containment forces one to face oneself on very deep levels.
Thus this body of work consists of various existential interpretations of my inner state and the sublime in landscape painting. Deserts are places of the element of air and so I worked with the place where earth and ‘heaven’ meets and with the Kármán Line: a place where the earth’s atmosphere becomes too thin for aeroplanes to achieve flight and where the rest of the universe begins.

NtlHanTle [in the direction of beauty](2018)
In this series I continue my work with ‘sense of place’ by creating veld studies and landscape paintings of South Eastern Botswana.
My connection to Botswana is a romantic one, as my partner, Colin Campbell, spent his childhood communing and connecting with the natural world here. The paintings originate from visits which were guided by Colin and his brother Niall, who are both locally-trained African medicine doctors. My encounters are infused by traditional stories and nostalgic memories shared by my guides about each place and their sadness around the rapidly disappearing natural and cultural heritage of Botswana.
The brothers and I communed with the sacred hill at Manyelanung, the rainmaking Modipe Hill and the birthplace of humans at Matsieng. We watched the moon rise as the setting sun stretched our shadows at Mogonye. We visited Fikeng, Kolobeng and we encountered the beautiful place of Ntlhantle during an unfolding dusk. Ntlhantle: In the Direction of Beauty is a tribute to these special places.
